How to make text bold in HTML

problem

You’re learning how to create webpages with HTML and wish to add some bold formatting on the text appearing on the screen. In this post we will see two ways to accomplish this.

SOLUTION

Using the <b> tag. Let’s say we have a line of text and we wish to turn it all bold.

For example:

bold.html

					<b>This is a line of text in bold</b>

output
line in bold example

The bold tag <b> has an opening and a closing tag </b>.

Let’s make bold only one word instead of the whole line.

For example:

bold.html

					This is a line of text in <b>bold</b>

output
one word in bold example

As you can see the tag can be nested in another tag. For example the line of text could have been in a <span> tag or a paragraph <p> tag.

For example:

bold.html

					<span>This is a line of text in <b>bold</b></span>

Using the tag as outer tag, for example:

bold.html

					<b>
    <p>This is a line of text in bold</p>
</b>

SOLUTION 2

Using the <strong> tag. Similarly to the <b> tag this tag specifies that the text inside it is important. The result is that it’s displayed as bold.

For example:

bold.html

					<strong>
    <p>This is a line of text in bold</p>
</strong>

output
line in bold example

conclusion

In this post we saw how to make a piece of text appearing bold on a webpage. We used 2 ways for making them bold

  1. the <b> tag and
  2. the <strong> tag

both of them has opening and closing tags.
